A New Play by Julia Saunders

LOVE CONSUMES US is a multi-media merging of the two most iconic depictions of the deleterious effects of LOVE & FAME known to the western world: Chekhov's the Seagull & the modern reality TV dating show.

It is an absurdist reimagining of the play Chekhov ironically described as a comedy. The characters attempt to claw their way out of a complicated and secretly queer love web while maintaining their public image on the set of the UK reality TV sensation Pleasure Island, where tragedy is paraded for LOLs and likes.

" LOVE CONSUMES US is an ingenious take on Chekhov, hilarious and very of this moment, with surprising theatrical twists! Anyone who has encountered The Seagull, and anyone who is addicted to reality TV must see this play. Julia is a writer to watch! "

Our Development

❤️

This project started out as a directorial concept: the Seagull, but set on the reality TV show Love Island.

In 2023, as resident artists of the Performance Space at CSSMA, Madeline Wall and Julia Saunders teamed up with multi-media artist Duncan Figurski to produce a workshop of the first act using the original text of the Seagull, with a British slang remix by Julia Saunders, a self proclaimed Love Island scholar.

“I was told about my own project by two teenage strangers on the subway.” -Julia Saunders.

This workshop, coined the Seagull-Luv Island, culminated in two sold-out performances and a surprising amount of buzz for a one-act workshop. Realizing the potential of this idea, Julia set about to fully reimagine the Seagull as their own full length adaptation. Having spent the last two years developing the script under the mentorship of playwright Amy Berryman, it has become its own beast, a new play by the title LOVE CONSUMES US.

Madeline and Julia are thrilled to be teaming up again to present the culmination of their efforts in an upcoming industry reading and can’t wait to share what they’ve come up with.
